Senior Home Care Tips: Fall Prevention In The Elderly

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) states that it is very common that seniors all around the world come across falls quite often. One out of three adults aged 65 and above falls every year. These falls are the leading cause of injury or even death at times. These falls can also be the real culprit behind senior nonfatal injuries and hospital admissions for trauma.

There is a series of issues that seniors tend to bear due to these falls including head traumas, hip fractures, lacerations. More importantly, it can have a severe impact on the brain that the brain may suffer from traumatic brain injuries. And, the common things that a senior might have to deal with due to sudden fall are fractures to his hip, arm, spine, leg, pelvis, and hand.

Isn’t it always better to think of prevention rather than going for a cure after something happens? In this article, we are going to demonstrate a series of prevention tips that will help to prevent falls for elderlies.

  1. Engage with Physical Activity Regularly

Seniors who don;t engage with physical activity regularly, it leads them to poor muscle tone. They also have to lose their bone mass and flexibility as they are not stretching their body. This can also be the reason for the weakness that a senior feels which leads them to fall frequently. Hence, it is necessary for every senior to engage with physical activities that will help increase leg strength and improve balance and flexibility.

  1. Review on the Medication

There are a lot of over-the-counter medicines that may lead seniors to drowsiness or dizziness. If your beloved elderly is having such problems, you need to contact his primary care physician so that he or she can advise on the leading cause to this.

  1. Visit the Eye Physician

Seniors often fall victim to poor depth perception or sensitivity to glare due to impaired vision that is caused by cataracts and glaucoma. If he or she does not visit his eye physician, it will be a burden on his way of navigating the way through the environment. Hence, visit the eye care physician regularly.

  1. Fall-proof the Home

The environment still remains one of the leading causes of falling for a senior. There are times when the outdoor pathways are cluttered with rocks and tools. Sometimes we may also not have enough light to discern the walkways. These can be one of the most fundamental causes. In such situations, we need to make sure that we make our homes fall-proof.
